Part of a series of us trying to figure out if we can make functional objects from mycelium.

Mycelium object experiments: cupholder

When we started experimenting with myco materials we were focusing on highlighting unique properties of the mushroom mycelium. Due to its amazing insulation properties, we created a mycelium sleeve to insulate cups with hot or cold beverages.

It turns out that it’s quite challenging to create moulds for hollow cylindrical shapes, but we got it working! Using finer substrate would have made it easier too 🙃

A flexible mycelium (a la @mycoworks @madewithreishi @mylo_unleather ) would probably make more sense for this application, but as of now it probably would be too expensive to produce for these purposes.
